Meet the National Champion, Wren Rafael Marcelo
On May 19, 2024, Wren had the privilege of participating in the 9th Japan Karate Association (JKA) Canadian National Championships in Montreal, Quebec. Competing alongside the best karate students in Canada, he aimed to place in the top 4 of his division in both kata (form) and kumite (practice fighting) to qualify for the Canadian National Team.
With focus and determination, Wren secured a silver medal in kata and ranked 4th in kumite. After waiting for the official results, he is thrilled to announce that he is now part of Team Canada. His dreams and focus are now set on the JKA Funakoshi Gichin 16th World Karate Championship to be held in Japan in October 2024, where the best of the best from around the world will compete.
His family, friends, sensei, trainers, and teammates couldn't be happier for him. It is such an honor and a big responsibility to be on the national team. This competition is like the “Olympics of JKA” or the “World Cup of Karate.”
However, to realize this dream coming true also means facing the reality that participating in a global competition like this comes with significant financial costs. Apart from the travel costs, accommodation expenses, and tournament fees for Japan, which are already overwhelming, he is also training with some of our country’s top mentors.
We are humbly reaching out to you all for your generous support, which will motivate and encourage him more to give his very best for Canada.

Why Karate-Do is important?
We believe that karate-do can deliver a simple but powerful set of benefits. Clearly, self-defense is at the top of the list, along with fitness and confidence. But also being respectful towards each other—it’s as important in the dojo as it is in the outside world. The final benefit of karate? Enjoyment. There's no point in karate training if it’s not enjoyable, whether this comes from your own progress or simply having a laugh.
Why JKA EMPOW-LIL ACADEMY?
We take our karate seriously, and that includes the fun and enjoyment we all get out of being members of JKA EMPOW-LIL Academy. We’re an open and welcoming karate club, properly and efficiently run with the interests, welfare, and enjoyment of our students as our top priority.
We practice authentic Japanese karate through JKA, our governing body and one of the most influential Shotokan karate organizations in the world. Lilia Tintila Boaghi is an experienced instructor of both junior and senior karate students. The club benefits hugely from her competition success and experience as a qualified instructor.
In addition to regular club training, we attend JKA’s national and international courses. We also run joint activities with other regional clubs and organize our own masterclasses with inspiring instructors.

KARATE FOR CHILDREN, YOUTH and TEENS
The Academy takes care of the development of its pupils from an early age. Children from the age of 4 train in the club. They learn how to live an active and healthy life, shape their character, and correct their figure. Systematic training teaches them humility and discipline. Thanks to karate classes, hyperactive children calm down, and shy ones gain more self-confidence. Karate develops comprehensively and harmoniously. This is a rarity, few sports have such advantages. Importantly, doctors recommend karate for the prevention and treatment of postural defects.
KARATE FOR ADULTS
Karate can be started at any age, regardless of physical strength. Systematic training improves circulation, strengthens the body, and helps to maintain good shape and well-being.
Karate for people with special needs
The Academy conducts trainings for people with neurological problems (Down syndrome, ADHD). Thanks to the training, participants gain more self-confidence. Individuals with special needs find that they can easily adapt and fit in with the main stream. We are about inclusiveness, not exclusiveness.
About the Dojo
We offer an unpretentious and results-oriented community that’s invested in your goals and success. Check your ego at the door and get ready to sweat!
“Spirit first, technique second.”
